Most of the time, small things let us question our cognition. In order to be able to deal with an immersive flood of information, our brain takes "some" short cuts and processes information based on fixed patterns. Our brain "decides", how we experience the world. But at times, it is not able to classify an information, so that we have to pause for a moment. This is when we become aware of our world, start thinking about it.
There are some philosophical theories stating, that the world only exists within our brains. Fact is: We (including modern science!) don`t know it. We cannot be sure, if the world and all our experiences are "just" products of our brain. This may not lead into some kind of deconstructive nihilism a la "if the world only exists within my brain I can do whatever I want". Even if the world only exists between our ears, we still can be happy or unhappy within it. And it still follows the law of action and reaction.
